Trustees and Key Roles

  • Angela Childs

    Trustee

I took a CertEd in Art & Education at the University of Leeds, followed by a degree in Graphic Design & Illustration at the University of Hull. I also have a Certificate in Art Curating from Chelsea School of Art. Much of my career has been spent working in London, with, for and alongside artists.

I’ve been with Hastings Arts Forum for eight years in various capacities, including Deputy Chair and as curator or organiser of a number of exhibitions. I am now looking forward to the exciting new phase ahead of us and to playing my part in bringing Hastings Arts Forum to an even wider public.

  • Jo Welsh

    Trustee

I have been working in adult education, both in the private and public sector, since leaving art school. Currently I help manage programmes of learning for The Corporation of London as well as progressing my own studio practise.

I was a Governor at Sir John Cass Primary School 1998-2018 and have a long experience of being an active member of committees and meetings making financial and strategic decisions.

I have lived and worked in Hastings for 9 years and have been exhibiting and curating at HAF since 2011. I organised the first Big Draw at HAF in 2013, and became a Trustee in 2018.

  • Ian O'Leary

Head of Marketing Team / Trustee

Born in Sheffield where I studied graphics for 2 years and then photography at Derby College of Art before moving to London in the seventies to work as a freelance assistant. I then ran a busy studio for over 40 years and brought up my four children with my partner Helen, finally semi retiring to St Leonards in 2016.

I work with the marketing team producing images for publicity including social media, the website and local press. I enjoy working with the members and contributing to the Forum in any way I can.

  • Lesley Barker

    Head of Exhibitions

    I have a BA(Hons) in Fine Art.

Before moving down to Hastings, I taught a variety of art classes at St. Albans College of Further Education, and worked in the art department of a local secondary school. I also ran private art and craft classes.

I have been Head of Exhibitions at HAF for the last four years. Along with my exhibitions committee, it is a privilege to meet our HAF artists, look at their work, and support them in exhibiting their work. We aspire to produce a varied and interesting exhibitions calendar throughout the year, which demonstrates and celebrates the work of all our members.

I also head our fantastic installation team, who work so hard every other Monday hanging our exhibitions. Our aim is to consistently curate and mount your exhibitions to the highest possible standard in our beautiful HAF gallery overlooking the sea.

  • Ray McChrystal

    Trustee

I am currently a freelance Paper Conservator, restoring works of art on paper. This includes watercolours, prints (etchings, silkscreen etc), posters and paper ephemera. Running alongside this is my own practice which over the years has consolidated into watercolour and mixed media on paper.

Nearly twenty years ago I attended the first meeting of a group of artists and creatives that eventually became the Arts Forum. I have been a member ever since and have had two one man shows (and another one booked for 2022) and have exhibited in many group shows. The not for profit, co-operative, economic and social model of the Gallery, being funded, manned and dedicated to show artists’ work is one that I totally adhere to and I am always proud to say to anyone who is asking that it is a unique and fantastic space for any for any artist with a desire to exhibit their work.
